• The film is based on the autobiographical book by John Grogan, "Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog" (2005).
• Twenty-two dogs were used in the filming to play the role of the main character, the dog Marley.
• Owen Wilson's character's parents were played by the actor's real parents.
• The author of the book on which the film was based (John Grogan) appeared in a cameo role as the owner of a cocker spaniel in the dog training lesson scene.
• David Frankel wanted the nature in the film to reflect the stages of a dog's life, and it was especially important for him to show a colorful and vibrant autumn. However, it was not possible to film in autumn, and shooting was scheduled for late spring, when the trees are covered in foliage. The bright green color of the leaves was later altered by Pixel Magic studio specialists, processing each tree individually.
• The dog Marley received his name in honor of the famous Jamaican musician Bob Marley.
• The name of Owen Wilson's character is John Grogan. The author of the book of the same name, on which the film is based, also bears this name.
