What's left behind the scenes

  • David Lean was not a particularly well-read man and only learned about 'Great Expectations' in 1939 when his wife, Kay Walsh (also a co-writer of the film's screenplay), dragged David to the theater. In that production, Herbert Pocket was played by Alec Guinness. He subsequently played Herbert in Lean's film and also appeared in five other films directed by him. Incidentally, the role of Herbert became Guinness's first major role in cinema (in previous roles, Guinness didn't even have to open his mouth).
  • Cinematographer Guy Green replaced Robert Krasker because David Lean believed that Krasker couldn't handle the scenes on the marsh.
