What's left behind the scenes

  • Director George P. Cosmatos (1941-2005) was provided with 50-60 drawings of the creature. Elements from all versions were combined into a single monster – huge, with a fish-like head, sharp teeth, and the ability to integrate distinctive features of its victims into its own body.
  • At the beginning of the film, one of the characters runs out of air, and the captain tries to help him by working on the ship's computer. At one point, Luxo with a ball flashes on the monitor – a lamp from the Pixar studio logo and the character from the studio's very first short animated film.
  • While working on the creature's appearance, director George P. Cosmatos and visual effects artist Stan Winston (1946-2008) reviewed photographs of various marine creatures, as well as medical books. Fascinated by the forms of living beings found in nature, they came up with the idea of combining parts of the human body and a deep-sea creature into a single body.
