What's left behind the scenes
- After finishing the screenplay, Sofia Coppola was terribly disappointed to learn that work was already underway on producing a film adaptation of the novel of the same name (1993) by Jeffrey Eugenides. The creators of that adaptation were not enthusiastic about the screenplay, so Coppola offered them hers, and it was accepted.
- After seeing Scarlett Johansson in Lisa Krueger’s drama 'Thieves' (1996), Sofia Coppola offered her a role in this film, but Johansson declined.
- Hanna R. Hall auditioned for the role of Lux, but it was decided she was too young for the part and she was cast as Cecilia instead.
