Short description
An acclaimed physicist has perfected his newest invention: the Resonator, a machine which allows those near to it to glimpse life not visible to the naked eye.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The studio objected to Barbara Crampton's participation in the film, believing she looked too young to convincingly play a psychologist, but director Stuart Gordon insisted that the role of Dr. McMillian be given to her.
  • Most of the special effects were created by John Carl Buehler.
  • Later, the resonator sounds were used by the rap-rock group Beastie Boys in the song «Intergalactic» on their fifth studio album «Hello Nasty» (1998).
  • The story by H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) from 1920, on which this film is based, is only 7 pages long.
  • The film was shot in Italy, with Italian crew members – all in the name of saving money. According to director Stuart Gordon, the film would have cost $15 million in the States, whereas in Italy, everything cost approximately $2.5 million. Filming took place at 'Dinocittà' near Rome. It was once created by Dino De Laurentiis (1919-2010), then the studio came into the ownership of the Italian government to settle a tax debt and was sold to Empire Studios.
  • Doctor Bloch was named after Robert Bloch (1917-1994), the author of the novel on which Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) based his psychological thriller 'Psycho' (1960). Bloch was a great admirer of Lovecraft and even corresponded with him for a time.
  • Doctor Pretorious was named after Doctor Septimus Pretorious, Henry Frankenstein’s former teacher who lured his student to the dark side.
  • As with the filming of the horror film 'Re-Animator' (1985), Stuart Gordon used the services of medical advisors to ensure the accuracy of his characters’ actions while playing the roles of doctors and nurses.
  • The leather costume of the mistress from the role-playing sexual games was later sold by Barbara Crampton.
  • The studio objected to Barbara Crampton’s involvement in the film, believing she looked too young to credibly play a psychologist, but director Stuart Gordon insisted on the actress’s candidacy.
  • Later, the sounds of the resonator were used by the rap-rock group Beastie Boys in the track “Intergalactic.”
  • The 1920 Howard Phillips Lovecraft story on which the film is based is only 7 pages long.
  • The film was shot in Italy, with Italian crew members – all in the name of saving money. According to director Stuart Gordon, it would have cost $15 million to make the film in the States.
  • Doctor Bloch was named after writer Robert Bloch.
  • Doctor Pretorius was named after Dr. Septimus Pretorius, a former teacher of Henry Frankenstein.
  • As with the filming of 'Re-Animator,' Stuart Gordon used the services of medical consultants.
  • Barbara Crampton subsequently sold the leather costume of the character.
  • Later, the resonator sounds were used by the rap-rock group Beastie Boys in the song "Intergalactic."
  • The film was shot in Italy, with Italians included in the film crew – all for the sake of economy. According to director Stuart Gordon, the film would have cost $15 million in the United States.
