The film is based on the novel by Swedish writer Jonas Jonasson, "The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared" (2009).
At the time of the film's release in December 2013, Robert Gustafsson, who played the main character, was 48 years old. Thus, the actor was 52 years younger than the character he portrayed.
After filming was completed, Robert Gustafsson calculated that he had spent 3 weeks in the makeup chair. There were days when they started applying his makeup at 2 a.m. to be ready for the start of the shooting day.
Scenes for Bali were indeed filmed on this island in the Malay Archipelago. Vehicle license plates begin with the letters DK, followed by numbers and two more letters. These plates are valid in Bali and on the neighboring island of Lombok, however, unlike Bali, Lombok does not have a zoo.
