What's left behind the scenes

  • The filmmakers were unable to pay James Stewart (1908-1997) the $200,000 fee he requested, so the actor proposed something unprecedented – a share of the film's profits instead of a one-time fee. This payment scheme with actors was subsequently widely adopted and replaced the practice of long-term contracts with actors. It is claimed that Stewart ultimately received around $600,000 for the film.
