• The prison scenes were filmed in three locations. The exterior of the building was filmed in Mo, approximately 40 kilometers east of Paris, where the local prison was used for this purpose. The corridors were filmed in the National Library of France in Paris. The remaining interior spaces (cells and visiting room) were built as sets.
• 150 children auditioned for the role of Oscar. Initially, director Fred Cavayé wanted to choose a 5-year-old child, but it turned out to be unsuitable, as the law allows five-year-olds to work only 2 hours a day. Eventually, Cavayé found the shy 6-year-old Lancelot Roca. Cavayé was attracted by his physical resemblance to Diane Kruger.
• The scenes set in South Africa were filmed in Belgium and Spain.
