What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on real events that occurred at the end of 2005 with Judith Miller, an American journalist for The New York Times, who was involved in a scandal over a leak of information from the White House. Miller spent about three months in jail after refusing to reveal the source who told her the name of a CIA agent.
  • The film includes a scene in which Vera Farmiga's character undergoes a lie detector test. For the filming of this scene, director Rod Lurie enlisted a real specialist with a genuine polygraph. He asked the actress if her name was Erika Von Doren and if she worked for the CIA (as her character in the film). After filming, the specialist told the director that Farmiga had deceived the machine – it showed that, when answering affirmatively to the questions about her name and place of work, the actress was telling the truth.
