The screenplay, originally titled 'Road Home,' was written in 2007, but the title had to be changed over time to avoid confusion with Peter Weir's drama 'The Way Back' (2010). The title plays on the term 'way back seat,' which refers to the rearmost, often hidden, seat in the cargo area of a van. In the 1970s, this is what the third row seat in a van was called.
In one scene, Owen tells Duncan: 'I hate clowns. Just kidding. I really hate them.' Sam Rockwell, who played Owen, starred in the horror film 'Clownhouse' (Victor Salva, 1989), in which his character and his brothers are terrorized by escaped mental patients dressed as clowns.
