The film is based on the novel by Alexandre Key, "Escape to Witch Mountain" (1968).
In recognition of their contributions, Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann, who played Tony and Tia, received small roles in the remake released 34 years later. Kim Richards played a waitress in a roadside diner, and Ike Eisenmann played the sheriff of the town where the main characters end up.
Kim Richards' younger sister, Kyle Richards, played Tia in the flashbacks.
During the filming of a fight scene between the boys, the actor playing Track accidentally swung the bat too hard and hit young Ike Eisenmann. For this reason, if you look closely, you can sometimes see a greenish bruise under Tony’s left eye in some scenes.
The role in "Escape to Witch Mountain" was Rita Shaw’s last acting role.
