- The first anime to use 24 frames per second.
- At the time of its release, this was the most expensive anime film ever made.
- The scene from the beginning of the anime in which Shotaro Kaneda brakes his motorcycle while sliding sideways, due to its popularity and frequent references, received its own name – the "Akira slide."
