• The film is based on the novel of the same name by Joe Hill (Stephen King's son).
• Shia LaBeouf was initially considered for the lead role, but Daniel Radcliffe was ultimately cast instead.
• Filming began in late September 2012 in British Columbia (Canada). It took place in Vancouver, Mission, and Squamish. Filming wrapped in December 2012.
• Ig's license plate number is 2036LUK, which is a reference to the Bible (Luke 20:36): "nor can they die anymore, for they are like angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection."
• The band accompanying Terry in the bar is a Vancouver (Canada) band called The Brass Action. The song they are playing is The Devil Down Below from their album «Making Waves» (2013).
• When Ig's brother, Terry, drives Merrin home from the diner, the car's license plate – GEN 138 – can be noticed, which is a reference to the Bible (Genesis 13:8): "And Abram said to Lot, 'Let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are kinsmen.'"
• The scene where Heather Graham's character leaves the cafe, returning home, references her other, more famous role in "Twin Peaks," where the actress also played waitress Annie Blackburn, and the neon cafe sign reflected in a puddle is one of David Lynch's signature techniques.
