What's left behind the scenes

  • Towards the end of filming, Natalie Wood (1938-1981) died, and the studio management tried to cover up the project and claim insurance by stating that director Douglas Trumbull would no longer complete the project. However, according to the terms of the contract, this decision was up to Trumbull himself, and he decided to finish filming, using doubles instead of Wood and shooting scenes with her character from new angles. The studio was not thrilled with this decision, so "Brainstorm" became Trumbull’s last Hollywood project. After that, he focused on IMAX format films, working on attractions in amusement parks, and the like.
  • Natalie Wood's younger sister, Lana Wood, participated in the filming of some scenes after Natalie Wood's death.
  • By the time Natalie Wood signed the contract to star in this film, she hadn't worked for two years and had gained 11 kilograms. Before filming began, she went on a radical diet to lose weight, but then, due to an excessive fondness for alcohol, she began to gain weight again.
  • After Natalie Wood's death, several scenes with water that had already been filmed were cut from the film. In one such scene, Wood's and Christopher Walken's characters dive into a pool, and in another, these characters row canoes in a pond.
  • "Paradise" was filmed by making a hole in a sheet of steel and placing a powerful quartz lamp directly behind it, shining through a piece of scratched plastic.
