Short description
The true story of William Wilberforce and his courageous quest to end the British slave trade. Along the way, Wilberforce meets intense opposition, but his minister urges him to see the cause through.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the episode where Ioan Griffiths' character performs the Christian hymn "Amazing Grace," the actor sings himself. Several takes were made, and the final version of the film included an edited take, but Griffiths did the singing. Director Michael Apted initially had no idea if the actor could sing, let alone that Griffiths was an excellent singer.
- In one scene, the characters debate whether it is possible to remain loyal to a king who tries to shake hands with a tree and looks at Germany through a telescope. In reality, this is a reference to King George III (1738-1820), who suffered from variegate porphyria (one of the manifestations of the disease is neuropsychiatric disorders).
