Short description
Sly and dry intelligence agent Harry Palmer is tasked with investigating British Intelligence security, and is soon enmeshed in a world of double-dealing, kidnap and murder when he finds a traitor operating at the heart of the secret service.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Len Deighton, author of "The Ipcress File," was seriously passionate about cooking in addition to writing spy novels. He even had his own column in The Observer dedicated to culinary arts. Clippings from these columns can be seen in the film – they decorate the walls of Harry Palmer's kitchen.
  • Christopher Plummer was initially planned for the role of Harry Palmer, but he had already signed a contract to star in "The Sound of Music," and Joan Collins was initially considered for the role of Jean.
  • On the first day of filming, director Sidney Fury gathered the entire crew in the studio and burned the script. "This is what I think of it," he declared to his stunned colleagues. They had to rewrite everything urgently.
  • Palmer is the first hero in a spy film to wear glasses (Michael Caine is actually nearsighted and wears glasses in everyday life).
  • Harry Palmer's glasses were called Teviot 74. They were inexpensive yet very elegant glasses with dark brown frames. Len Dayton was also wearing the same ones at the time.
