What's left behind the scenes

  • The actors playing Vikings wore hockey shoulder pads under their clothes to appear more imposing.
  • Comics with the same title as the film were released.
  • As a bet with his friend Karl Urban, Jack Black once replaced an extra playing a Native American for the entire shooting day.
  • In order to receive an R rating (persons under 17 are only allowed with a parent or legal guardian), director Marcus Nispel cut 8 minutes of footage, including scenes of violence and sex, during editing. These scenes can be found on the DVD and Blu-ray releases.
  • The filmmakers knew that Vikings did not actually decorate their helmets with horns, but they decided to add them anyway because viewers were accustomed to associating Vikings with horned helmets, and furthermore, horned helmets look more intimidating.
  • The Scout's House was built around a real tree discovered on the filming location. The appearance of the Indian huts features elements reminiscent of the Sydney Opera House.
  • The Vikings in the film speak modern Icelandic.
  • The props department created helmets from rubber and metal. Rubber helmets were used during stunt filming, as wearing metal helmets at those moments could have caused injury to the actors.
  • Director Marcus Nispel did not shave from the start of fundraising for filming until the end of the shooting period, and then he shaved and cut his hair completely.
