Short description
Joe Toy, on the verge of adolescence, finds himself increasingly frustrated by his single father, Frank's attempts to manage his life. Declaring his freedom once and for all, he escapes to a clearing in the woods with his best friend, Patrick, and a strange kid named Biaggio. He announces that they are going to build a house there, free from responsibility and parents. Once their makeshift abode is finished, the three young men find themselves masters of their own destiny, alone in the woods.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Chris Galletta's screenplay was on the "Black List" (an annual list of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood) in 2009. Other screenplays from this list included: "The Social Network" (2010), "Friends with Benefits" (2011), and "Crazy, Stupid, Love." (2011).
  • Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts specifically trained his actors to improvise and insisted that they remain in character during breaks between takes. He even secretly filmed them during these moments to capture their natural behavior. He had a special code word for the cinematographer, upon hearing which, the cinematographer would start filming. Many such episodes (when the actors were unaware they were being filmed) were inserted into the film during editing.
  • Local television news reports that Joe has brown hair and blue eyes. In reality, Joe has brown eyes.
