What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on John Carlin's article "A Farewell to Arms".
  • Bruce Willis’s stunt double, Larry Rippenkruger, was seriously injured during filming after falling from a height of eight meters. Filming had to be suspended. Following the incident on the set of the fourth "Die Hard" film, Larry spent several months in a clinic, where his fractured wrist, face, and skull bones were replaced with titanium prostheses.
  • At an early stage of production, the film was titled "Tears of the Sun." Bruce Willis agreed to participate in the project on the condition that he could use this title for the 2003 film starring Monica Bellucci and Bruce Willis himself.
  • The French title of the film translates as "Die Hard 4.0: Return to Hell."
  • Jessica Simpson auditioned for the role of John McClane's daughter, but failed miserably.
  • Justin Timberlake was in negotiations to join the project – he could have been cast as John McClane's son.
  • Filming period: September 23, 2006 – February 14, 2007.
  • Director Kevin Smith played a hacker nicknamed WarLock. In the credits, the letter 'm' in his last name, Smith, flickers and gradually disappears, forming the word Sith. The Sith are characters from the "Star Wars" saga, a devoted fan of which is Smith, and, judging by the setting in the basement, his character in the film as well.
  • When McClane meets FBI agent Johnson, he asks, "What, another Johnson?" This is a reference to two FBI agents named Johnson from the first film.
  • A Terminator figurine falls onto Matt's keyboard. This is a nod to composer Marco Beltrami and executive producer William Wisher Jr.; the former wrote the music for the third Terminator film, and the latter worked on the first two.
  • Kevin Smith filmed all of his scenes in 5 days.
  • Thomas Gabriel notes that McClane is "always in the wrong place at the wrong time." This was the tagline for the second installment of the "Die Hard" series (1990).
  • The film features the game Gears of War twice – at the beginning of the film, a young man is playing it, and in Warlock's command center on one of the monitors.
  • The name 'Továrek' that May Lin uses while disguised as an FBI agent is a Polish word meaning 'hot cow'.
  • In Matt's room, a music video for Flyleaf's song 'I'm so sick' is playing on television.
  • Bruce Willis performed most of his character's stunts himself.
  • An early version of the script was set in the Caribbean Islands, where John McClane travels to find his daughter Lucy. The girl had grown up and works as a cabaret dancer. It turns out that McClane paid very little attention to not only his wife but also his daughter over the past 10 years. A Japanese man was threatening Lucy's life. In the script, McClane rarely used firearms, having only one pistol which he fired twice. The rest of the time was devoted to hand-to-hand combat.
  • During the confrontation with McClane at the power station, Lynn's hair comes loose, but after she throws the detective out the window, her hair somehow briefly returns to a bun.
  • At the 45th minute of the film, Cyril Raffaelli's character jumps out of a helicopter. As he falls onto a car, his headphones fly off, then he gets up and is suddenly wearing them again, which he later removes.
  • When John is driving the tractor-trailer behind the biohazard van, he hits several parked cars. The film clearly shows the truck sustaining significant damage on both sides during these collisions. A few minutes later, when the plane launches a missile at it, the tractor-trailer is shown completely undamaged.
  • The barrel of the gun Thomas Gabriel points at Lucy McClane should be hot after being fired and should leave a burn mark on the girl's neck. But in the film, it remains cold.
  • At the 16th minute of the film, during the attack on McClane's car, the rear window is clearly open, and in the next shot, it is already closed.
  • During the chase after the biohazard van at 1:51:52, it is clearly visible that the truck crashes into a BMW E38, and the next frame shows the collision with a Mercedes E190 (w201).
  • The film is based on John Carlin's article "A Farewell to Arms."
  • Director Kevin Smith played a hacker nicknamed WarLock. In the credits, the letter 'm' in his last name, Smith, flickers and gradually disappears, forming the word Sith. The Sith are characters from the "Star Wars" saga, a devoted fan of which Smith is, and, judging by the setting in the basement, so is his character in the film.
  • Thomas Gabriel notes that McClane is "always in the wrong place at the wrong time." This was the tagline for the second installment in the "Die Hard" series, "Die Hard 2" (1990).
