Short description
Two leading computer scientists work toward their goal of Technological Singularity, as a radical anti-technology organization fights to prevent them from creating a world where computers can transcend the abilities of the human brain.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Jude Law, James McAvoy, Tobey Maguire, and Christian Bale were considered for one of the leading roles.
  • Christoph Waltz was offered a supporting role.
  • After Kate Winslet declined the lead female role due to scheduling conflicts, Noomi Rapace was considered as a replacement.
  • Ewan McGregor and Tom Hardy were considered for the role of Max, but both declined due to scheduling conflicts.
  • The initial screenplay for the film, written by Jack Paglen, appeared on the “Black List” of the best unproduced screenplays of 2012.
  • Continuing his active advocacy for the use of film stock instead of digital formats, Wally Pfister shot this film in anamorphic format on 35mm film and refused to use a digital camera. He also used photochemical processing, foregoing a digital intermediate.
  • Alison Brie auditioned for the role that ultimately went to Kate Mara.
  • When Evelyn checks into the hotel that Will booked for her, she tells the front desk that she has a reservation under the name "Turing." Alan Turing was a British mathematician and scientist who developed the concept of the "Universal Machine" and invented the Turing test – a method for determining a computer's "intelligence."
  • The film features a cameo by Elon Musk. He appears at the beginning of the film at a conference.
