What's left behind the scenes

  • When Rachel returns from Boston, she passes a road sign that reads “Derry 20 miles.” Derry is the name of the town that features in many works by Stephen King, especially in the novel “It” (1986).
  • According to animal trainer Melissa Millett, five stray cats were chosen for the role of Church, but one became so frightened on set that only four remained. They lived in trailers with the trainers, but one had to be kept in a separate trailer because he didn't get along with the other cats. Eventually, homes were found for all the cats – two were taken by the animal coordinator, two were placed by Millett with friends, and the last one was adopted by her.
  • Speaking about the original film adaptation of the novel “Pet Sematary” (Mary Lambert, 1989), Stephen King said that this novel truly scares him more than any other he has written.
  • Egg white and chalk were used for the cats’ makeup, and corn syrup mixed with food coloring was used to create fake blood. The cats ate and drank while their makeup was being applied. According to the trainers, the cats got used to the makeup in about two months.
  • The novel mentions a tribe of Native Americans who lived in this area long ago. Directors Kevin Kolsh and Dennis Widmyer added an explanation to the film that, upon learning of the supernatural power of the area, the tribe chose to relocate.
  • According to Jason Clarke, the scariest thing during the filming of the movie was digging up the daughter at a real cemetery at 4 a.m.
