The names of the following film characters are based on the names of famous horror and science fiction directors: George A. Romero (Chris Romero), John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper (James Carpenter Hooper), David Cronenberg (Cynthia Cronenberg), James Cameron (Detective Ray Cameron), John Landis (Detective Landis), Sam Raimi (Sergeant Raimi) and Steve Miner (Janitor Miner).
The scene with the tool shed was filmed after the main shooting period had ended. A "raw" version of the film was shown to a focus group, and viewers decided that the film lacked action, so it was added. Director Fred Dekker, taking the opportunity, added a scene where zombies climb a fire escape, some elements to the living room scene, and one of the scenes with Cameron played by Tom Atkins.
Fred Dekker included in the script all the clichés from B-movies that he could remember and insisted on directing the film himself based on his own script.
