Short description
Stingo, a young writer, moves to Brooklyn in 1947 to begin work on his first novel. As he becomes friendly with Sophie and her lover Nathan, he learns that she is a Holocaust survivor. Flashbacks reveal her harrowing story, from pre-war prosperity to Auschwitz. In the present, Sophie and Nathan's relationship increasingly unravels as Stingo grows closer to Sophie and Nathan's fragile mental state becomes ever more apparent.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on William Styron's novel "Sophie's Choice" (1979).
- Meryl Streep learned to speak with a Polish accent.
- Meryl Streep literally begged director Alan J. Pakula on her knees to give her the role. Martha Keller and Barbra Streisand also vied for the role, but Pakula gave it to Streep.
- The credits at the end of the film state that the only non-fictional character in the film was Rudolf Höss (1900-1947), the name of the commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp (1940-1943).
- Meryl Streep played the final scene in one take, refusing to redo it. Many years later, she admitted in one of the episodes of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" (1986-2011), where the scene was shown, that she hadn't seen it since filming "Sophie's Choice" was completed.
