• The film is based on the novel of the same name by Larry Brown.
• Gary Poulter, who played the role of Wade, was actually homeless. David Gordon Green offered him the role in the film, as he often practices involving local people in his films. Poulter died on the streets of Austin a couple of months after filming wrapped.
• In preparing for his role in this film, Nicolas Cage turned down roles in the action films 'The Expendables 3' (2014) by Patrick Hughes and 'Season of the Witch' (2013) by Mark Steven Johnson, despite being in financial difficulties at the time.
