Short description
Following a tragic accident that leaves him disfigured, crazed composer Erique Claudin transformed into a masked phantom who schemes to make beautiful young soprano Christine Dubois the star of the opera and wreak revenge on those who stole his music.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the scene where three heroes are escaping from the collapsing lair of the Phantom of the Opera, only Susanna Foster (1924-2009) was present on the set. The male actors decided not to risk themselves due to their star status, and stunt doubles were used instead.
- Nelson Eddy's (1901-1967) hair was dyed black, as required for the role, possibly to more closely resemble Norman Kerry (1894-1956) from the 1925 black and white film. Eddy agreed to the procedure only when makeup artist Jack Pierce (1889-1968) created a dye that lasted only one day and could, accordingly, be washed out in the evening after filming, allowing Eddy, who was of Dutch origin, to continue to sport his blond hair.
