What's left behind the scenes

  • Woody Allen’s first serious dramatic film, who was always known for his comedies and simply wanted to break the usual boundaries by making a film without a drop of humor. The film contains a single moment when the family gathers around the table, laughing at a joke that Arthur has just told, but there are no shots in the film of him telling that joke.
  • This is the first film by Woody Allen in which he does not appear as an actor.
  • The character of Eve (mother) was conceived by Woody Allen specifically for Ingrid Bergman. He offered her the role, but she regretfully declined because she had already signed a contract to film Ingmar Bergman's 'Autumn Sonata' (1978), which was being filmed in Norway. The role ultimately went to Geraldine Page, and both actresses were nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for their roles in these films. Both lost to Jane Fonda (who received the award for her role in 'Coming Home', 1978).
  • Diane Keaton suggested the film's title to Woody Allen, which he ultimately used.
  • This film was inspired by the works of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman.
  • This film was the last for Joel Schumacher as a costume designer.
  • In the church, when Eve knocks over the table with the candles, the sound of breaking glass can be heard as they fall to the floor. But when she leaves, there are no candles on the floor.
