Barbra Streisand was offered the lead role. She declined, as she felt she was too young for the part of Alice, and also did not want to play a failed singer for fear of damaging her musical career.
The opening scene references Victor Fleming's "The Wizard of Oz" (1939).
The film was shot in a real restaurant located in Phoenix, Arizona. This restaurant was initially called "Mel's Diner," then "Pat's Diner," and later reverted to its original name.
One of Laura Dern's earliest film appearances, as the daughter of Diane Ladd. She is a little blonde girl in glasses in the final restaurant scene.
Alice promises Tommy to send him to Monterey, California for his birthday. Later, they pass by a large supermarket sign that reads "Monterey Village."
The film's relative success in theaters spawned the television series "Alice" in 1976, which ran for nearly ten years.
