The film is based on Meg Rosoff's novel "How I Live Now" (2004).
The original title of the film translates to "How I Live Now".
Director Kevin Macdonald initially intended to cast unknown actors for the film and was looking for a 16-year-old American girl for the role of Daisy. However, the role ultimately went to 19-year-old Irishwoman Saoirse Ronan, who read the scene she was given at the audition so powerfully that the entire committee was crying.
Saoirse Ronan did not dye her hair for the role. She wore a wig.
Before George MacKay was cast as Edmund, only about ten people had auditioned for the role, each paired with Saoirse Ronan for their audition.
The man Daisy (Saoirse Ronan) shoots is the real father of the actress, Paul Ronan.
The original title of the film translates to "How I Live Now".
