Short description

North Carolina mountains at the end of the 1920s – George and Serena Pemberton, love-struck newly-weds, begin to build a timber empire. Serena soon proves herself to be equal to any man: overseeing loggers, hunting rattle-snakes, even saving a man’s life in the wilderness. With power and influence now in their hands, the Pembertons refuse to let anyone stand in the way of their inflated love and ambitions. However, once Serena discovers George’s hidden past and faces an unchangeable fate of her own, the Pemberton’s passionate marriage begins to unravel leading toward a dramatic reckoning.

The film was shot in the Czech Republic.
Jennifer Lawrence suggested Bradley Cooper for the lead male role.
Originally, Darren Aronofsky was to direct the film with Angelina Jolie in the lead role.
According to the director, a problem arose during post-production: due to airplane noise during filming in Prague, the dialogue needed to be re-dubbed. Jennifer Lawrence had a busy work schedule and couldn't come in to re-record her lines. The producers of 'Serena' (2014) tried to buy out Lawrence for one day from filming 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' (2013), but it turned out to be more expensive than the entire budget of 'Serena' (2014).
