Short description
In 1880s Australia, a lawman offers renegade Charlie Burns a difficult choice. In order to save his younger brother from the gallows, Charlie must hunt down and kill his older brother, who is wanted for rape and murder. Venturing into one of the Outback's most inhospitable regions, Charlie faces a terrible moral dilemma that can end only in violence.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Nick Cave wrote the screenplay for this film in just three weeks.
  • All of the costumes used in the film are handmade (for greater authenticity). Even the buttons were created by hand.
  • All the weapons in the film are replicas of weapons from the corresponding historical period. Each item was handmade by the renowned armorer Buck Merry, and the weapons were delivered to the set by train.
  • Director John Hillcoat specifically studied the historical period in which the film takes place, and he involved the rest of the project participants in this endeavor. According to Richard Wilson, who played Mike, he was provided with, among other things, videotapes of films and DVD discs. The materials he reviewed covered the history of Australia and the My Lai Massacre (a war crime committed by US soldiers in the My Lai village community in South Vietnam, which became known in 1969 during the Vietnam War). The director wanted the actor to understand how people become capable of killing without the slightest regret.
