• The film is based on Gene Brewer's novel 'K-PAX' (1995).
• Will Smith was originally considered for the role of Prot, and Kevin Spacey was to be cast as Dr. Powell.
• Prota's sunglasses were borrowed from Bono, the vocalist of U2.
• According to the script, the film's action takes place in New York, however, the Westin Bonaventure hotel, located in Los Angeles, is visible from the windows of Dr. Powell's office.
• The photograph of Robert Porter in the yearbook is actually a photograph of Kevin Spacey in the Chatsworth High School yearbook of 1977.
• The scene where Prota eats an entire banana was shot 27 times.
