Short description
A police chief in the war-torn streets of Los Angeles discovers that an extraterrestrial creature is hunting down residents - and that he is the next target.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger planned to star in the film, but ultimately chose to work on 'Terminator 2' (1991).
  • 'Predator 2' was the first film to receive an 'NC-17' rating (which had been introduced shortly before the film's premiere) due to the immense amount of violence on screen. The film was re-edited more than twenty times in order to obtain an 'R' rating.
  • The scene in which the Predator stages a bloody massacre in the subway was filmed in a huge soundstage at 20th Century Fox Studios. The shots of the moving train itself were filmed in Oakland, California.
  • Filming the shootout in East Los Angeles took three days.
  • The ideas for the appearance of the weapons used by the Predator belong to Stan Winston, Steven Hopkins, and Lawrence J. Paul.
  • Filming the scene at the slaughterhouse took four days.
  • The events shown in the film were originally intended to take place in New York, but due to budget constraints, the setting was changed to Los Angeles. The scene where the Predator raises the skull during a thunderstorm was supposed to take place on the roof of the Chrysler building.
  • Patrick Swayze could have played one of the roles in the film, but he was unable to participate in the project due to an injury sustained while filming 'Road House' (1989).
  • The sounds made by the Predator are a combination of sounds from cats, tigers, lions, and bears.
  • According to the film's screenwriters, Jim and John Thomas, a sequel to 'Predator' was not originally planned. The sequel was launched into production after successful sales of the comic book series about the interstellar hunter.
  • The Jamaican bandit group depicted in the film was based on a real gang that terrorized New York and Kansas City in the late 1980s.
  • One of the Predator costumes was stolen during the filming of the movie.
  • The script underwent numerous changes. For example, initially it was supposed to be Case (Gary Busey), not Dutch, the character from Arnold Schwarzenegger's first film, who would be featured. But Arnold disliked the idea of the action taking place in the city and turned down the role.
  • Danny's (Ruben Blades) last name is Arhuleta. Jay Tom Arhuleta was an assistant director on the first and second Predator films.
  • Producers offered John McTiernan the director's chair for a second time, but he declined.
  • Elpidia Carrillo, who played Anna in "Predator" (1987), played one of the roles in the film. Her name is mentioned in the end credits, but she is very difficult to spot in the film. This is because the scene with her participation was cut from the picture. In this scene, she recounts the events that took place in the South American jungle. Despite the scene being cut, Anna still appears on screen. Footage of her can be seen on a monitor in Peter Keyes' (Gary Busey) mobile command center when he is explaining the Predator's self-destruct mechanism.
  • Gary Busey's first film appearance after a motorcycle accident in which the actor nearly died.
  • John Lithgow was Steven Hopkins' initial choice for the role of Peter Keyes, but producer Joel Silver insisted on Gary Busey.
  • Among the Predator's trophies, one can notice the skull of an Alien.
  • The idea to include the Alien skull in the Predator's trophies belonged to Stan Winston, who also worked on the special effects for 'Aliens' (1986).
  • The following scenes were cut from the film: 1) A storyline about Leona's pregnancy. 2) The scene where Danny Glover chases the Predator was much longer. 3) A massacre carried out by the Predator in the subway.
  • One of the Predators gives Danny Glover's character a musket from 1715. According to the screenwriters, this was done to leave a clue for a sequel that would take place not in our time, but several centuries ago.
  • Bill Paxton's characters were killed in the respective films 'Aliens', 'Predator 2', and 'Terminator'.
  • The Predators on the ship at the end of the film are the Los Angeles Lakers NBA basketball team.
  • Filming took place from February 20 to June 8, 1990.
  • Elpidia Carrillo, who played Anna in "Predator" (1987), played one of the roles in the film. Her name is mentioned in the end credits, but she is very difficult to spot in the film.
