Short description
Short Term 12 is a drama set at a residential facility for at-risk teenagers, where young residents stay for periods ranging from a few days to about a year. Grace, in her twenties, works there as a supervisor and is devoted to the kids in her care, supported by a staff that includes her colleague and boyfriend, Mason. Her commitment is tested when Jayden, an intelligent but guarded new arrival who resists the rules, comes into the group. The connection Grace forms with her stirs up memories of Grace's own troubled childhood, and she begins withdrawing from Mason even as he tries to reach her.
The film was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who also wrote the screenplay. It was the first of the five features he directed, followed by The Glass Castle, Just Mercy, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Brie Larson plays Grace, with John Gallagher Jr. as Mason, Kaitlyn Dever as Jayden, Rami Malek as Nate and LaKeith Stanfield as Marcus; 56 cast members are credited in all.
Made on a budget of about 1 million dollars, the film took roughly 2 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.9/10 from around 95,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.7/10 from about 1,450 votes. A critics' rating of 8.4/10 from 174 reviews places it above both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- To convince director Destin Cretton to cast her, Brie Larson told him that she had joined volunteers working with disadvantaged children after reading the script to research the role. Cretton was impressed and cast her. It was only later that it became known that Larson had been rejected by every organization she approached.
- Almost all of the actors were cast through an open casting call. The only one who reprised his role from the 2008 short film "Short Term 12" was Lakeith Stanfield. He had already left acting and didn't even have a cell phone, so director Destin Daniel Cretton had to go to great lengths to find him.
- Nat Sanders was the film's editor. Both the original version and the director's cut ran for over two hours, while the director insisted the film be under 100 minutes. Ultimately, the film was cut down to 96 minutes.
- Brie Larson and John Gallagher Jr. were cast after auditions held via Skype.
