Short description
Nineteen-year-old Danny Flynn is imprisoned for his involvement with the I.R.A. in Belfast. He leaves behind his family and his sixteen-year-old girlfriend, Maggie Hamill. Fourteen years later, Danny is released from prison and returns to his old working class neighborhood to resume his life as a boxer.
What's left behind the scenes
- Daniel Day-Lewis (full name: Sir Daniel Michael Blake Day-Lewis) spent three years boxing to prepare for the role. He was trained by Barry McGuigan, a former boxer who now works as a sports commentator. McGuigan once said that the actor took the training so seriously and was in such excellent shape that he could have competed against professionals in his weight class.
- The film is set in Belfast, but it was shot almost entirely in the old and semi-abandoned districts of Dublin. The apartment building used in the film was scheduled for demolition, but the work was postponed until filming was completed.
