Initially, it was intended that Gary Rhodes, who played McDonald in 'Conquest of the Planet of the Apes' (J. Lee Thompson, 1972), would reappear on screen, but the actor declined, and his brother, played by Austin Stoker, was written into the plot.
The role of Mandemus, responsible for the arsenal, was played by Lew Ayers (1908-1996), known for his anti-war beliefs.
In the original ending of John William Corrington’s story, it was proposed to show children of both races (human and ape) peacefully playing in a playground. Paul Dehn insisted on a more ominous finale, but his suggestion was rejected.
