What's left behind the scenes

  • An enlarged photograph of a lobster claw was used to create the image of the planet Sha Ka Ree.
  • Film producer Harvey Bennett played the role of the Starfleet Commander.
  • During one working meeting, screenwriter David Lochery jokingly suggested making Uhura an exotic dancer in one of the film's scenes. To his surprise, the idea was immediately embraced.
  • William Shatner's director's cut ran for just over two hours, which Paramount Pictures considered too long. They insisted on a film length of 1 hour 45 minutes, which would allow for double the number of screenings in cinemas. Despite Shatner's claims that nothing more could be cut, producer Harvey Bennett (1930-2015) was tasked with reducing the film to the required length. The way he set about this task horrified Shatner, and Shatner and Bennett argued about it for a long time afterward.
  • Initially, it was planned for the characters played by Leonard Nimoy (1931-2015) and DeForest Kelley (1920-1999) to team up with Cybo, but Nimoy and Kelley objected, arguing that their characters would never betray Captain Kirk. Gene Roddenberry (1921-1991), the screenwriter and creator of the entire Star Trek universe, agreed with this argument.
  • According to George Takei, he initially refused to participate in the filming because he did not want to work with William Shatner, with whom he had always had a strained relationship, but Shatner nevertheless persuaded him to play Sulu.
  • The scene in which Spock talks to Captain Kirk while he is climbing to the top of El Capitan mountain in California (the rock surface is visible directly behind Kirk) was filmed in a parking lot with a wonderful view of the valley.
  • Linda Peters played the role of the exotic dancer. She was on screen for just over 53 seconds, while the makeup application took about 6 hours. The makeup covered almost her entire body, with prosthetic claws on her hands and feet, as well as a wig, detachable tail, prosthetic buttocks, contact lenses (which made her eyes look feline), and a mask that completely covered her face.
  • After filming, another six weeks were required to finalize the special effects used in the film's finale. Once completed, it was shown to William Shatner, but he was disappointed with the quality of the special effects. Shatner and Bennett appealed to the studio to finance a reshoot of the finale, but their request was denied.
