- The film is based on the novel of the same name by English writer Louis de Bernières, about the events of 1943, known as the Aquila Division Massacre.
- Louis de Bernières, the author of the novel that served as the literary basis for the film, rewrote the book around 35 times to convey to the reader, as accurately as possible, the stories he was told by locals.
- Initially, Roger Michell (1956-2021) was appointed director of the film, but he had a seizure and John Madden became the director.
