Short description
In the year 180 A.D. Germanic tribes are about to invade the Roman empire from the north. In the midst of this crisis ailing emperor Marcus Aurelius has to make a decission about his successor between his son Commodus, who is obsessed by power, and the loyal general Gaius Livius.

What's left behind the scenes

  • According to the film's plot, Marcus Aurelius was poisoned by conspirators, whereas, according to historians, he died during a campaign from the plague. The 'Battle of Four Armies' and alliance with the Parthians, shown in the film, also did not occur in the historical reality of that period.
  • In the 11th minute, the aquila of the 9th legion can be seen behind Marcus Aurelius. However, this legion is not listed in the register of legions compiled during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Also, Septimius Severus, whom the emperor greets, was never a proconsul of Judea.
