What's left behind the scenes

  • Barbra Streisand was originally slated to play the role of prostitute Gus Mally.
  • Constructing the house in the desert that was shot up cost $250,000; the building had 7,000 holes drilled into it for exploding firecrackers to simulate gunfire. A crew of 15 people prepared the shootout over a month, working 8 hours a day laying out the firecrackers. Special effects coordinator Chuck Gaspar (1938-2009) later stated that preparing the shootout scene was a sweat, because the film crew didn't have a second chance.
  • 8,000 rounds of ammunition were used in the shootout scene.
  • When the film was shown to focus groups, and it reached its climax, the audience started shouting: "Shoot the tires, you idiot!"
