What's left behind the scenes

  • Practically all the stunts and fight scenes in the film were performed by Tom Cruise himself. The actor refused to use stunt doubles.
  • Simon Pegg and Tom Cruise performed all their driving stunts themselves.
  • During filming, Tom Cruise sustained various injuries six times.
  • Tom Cruise himself performed the scene where his character grabs onto the door of a departing plane from the outside and is lifted into the air with it. No computer graphics were used in this scene. The actor was filmed by a camera mounted on the left wing of the aircraft. Special lenses were made to protect the actor's eyes from small particles. Eight takes were required to film this scene, with the plane ascending to an altitude of approximately 1.5 km.
  • The film's subtitle ("Rogue Nation" – "Tribe of Outcasts") caused a minor conflict between Paramount Studios and Disney Studios, which simultaneously announced the film "Star Wars: Rogue One" (2016). As a result, the studios reached an agreement that Disney would not advertise its film until Paramount's film was released.
  • Paula Patton and Maggie Q were originally slated to reprise their roles from "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol" (2011) and "Mission: Impossible III" (2006), but both actresses left the project due to scheduling conflicts.
  • Benedict Cumberbatch was the first actor considered for the role of the villain.
  • Initially, the producers wanted Brad Bird to direct the film, but he declined, deciding to direct "Tomorrowland" (2015). Ultimately, at Tom Cruise’s request, the producers invited Christopher McQuarrie to take his place.
  • The filmmakers wanted to cast Jessica Chastain in the lead female role, but she refused because she was unhappy with the prospect of spending about 6 months preparing for it. This is the second time Chastain has turned down a role in a film with Tom Cruise. The first time was when she declined to appear in "Oblivion" (2013).
  • Tom Cruise was originally slated to play Napoleon Solo in "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." (2015), but he ultimately chose to star in "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation" (2015).
  • Rebecca Ferguson bears a physical resemblance to Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman. Ferguson’s character in this film is named Ilsa Faust – this is a reference to Bergman’s character, Ilsa Lund, from "Casablanca" (1942).
  • An Arri Alexa 65 6.5K camera was used to film the underwater scenes.
  • The A400 aircraft used in the film was built in Seville (Spain) and transported to the UK specifically for filming. Interestingly, the actor who played the pilot of this aircraft, Mateo Rufino, is also from that city.
  • After more than a month of filming in Austria and Morocco, on September 28th, the film crew moved to London. On October 7th, a trailer carrying a damaged BMW M3 was spotted being transported from the filming locations in Morocco. On October 10th, Cruise and his stunt double Wade Eastwood were seen filming some scenes in Monaco. The filming of the scene featuring Ethan Hunt fighting while flying on an Airbus A400M took place at RAF Wittering airbase in Cambridgeshire. Filming began in Southampton on November 9th. On December 2, 2014, Cruise narrowly avoided being hit by a double-decker bus while filming scenes in London. However, it drove past, and no one was injured. According to confirmation from the director, filming wrapped on March 12, 2015.
  • In early versions of the script, in the previous installment of the franchise, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) was supposed to step away from field work and head the 'Mission Impossible' team. Christopher McQuarrie, brought in to revise the script, removed this twist from the film. Therefore, in Rogue Nation, the main character is Ethan Hunt, and the position of team leader is taken by a character played by Alec Baldwin.
  • During the motorcycle chase scene, when Ethan and Benji are in the car, but before Ethan asks about the seatbelt, the seatbelt on Benji is sometimes fastened and sometimes unfastened in previous shots.
  • At the beginning of the film, events unfold in Minsk. Ethan Hunt chases a military aircraft and then hangs onto its door as it takes off. As the plane gains altitude, a road can be seen in the distance, and the movement of the cars indicates that there is left-hand traffic. In Belarus, traffic is on the right.
  • Ethan Hunt addresses the Austrian Chancellor as the head of state. In reality, the Chancellor is the head of government, and the head of state in Austria is the President.
  • When Ethan answers Lane's call, he uses the phone correctly. However, during their conversation, it can be noticed that he is holding the phone upside down. This is visible by the speaker, which on this phone model (Lumia 930) is located on the lower part of the back panel.
  • In the final scene, when Lane is in the glass cube, after the shots are fired at the glass, neither bullets nor casings are visible. Additionally, cracks appear and disappear on the glass.
  • Around the 48th minute of the film, when Luther is on the roof, it can be seen that the helicopter's tail rotor is not spinning, even though the helicopter is taking off at that moment.
  • When the BMW flies through the gates, it can be noticed that they open before the car crashes into them.
  • At the beginning of the film, when Ethan tries to unlock the handcuffs, he can't reach the lock with the key. He could easily have avoided reaching around the pipe and simply brought his hands back behind it to calmly unlock the handcuffs.
  • The main villain of the film, being locked in a cube made of bulletproof glass, tries to shoot the glass with a pistol. In real life, in such a confined space, he would have been injured by a ricochet.

  • In early drafts of the script, in the previous installment, "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol," Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) was supposed to step down from field work and head up the IMF team. Christopher McQuarrie, brought in for script revisions, removed this plot point. Therefore, in "Rogue Nation," Ethan Hunt remains the main character, and Alec Baldwin's character takes on the role of team leader.
