What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, it was planned for Gene Kelly (1912-1996) to dance with Mickey Mouse, but Walt Disney (1901-1966) did not allow his famous character to appear in a film from MGM studio, so Kelly decided to use Jerry Mouse from the “Tom and Jerry” franchise. At first, it didn't work because the animators forgot to draw Jerry's shadow. They had to create an additional 10,000 new drawings, which took 2 months and $100,000.
  • It took Frank Sinatra (1915-1998) eight weeks to learn the dance on the pier. The scene was shot in 72 takes, although this is more attributable to Gene Kelly’s perfectionism than to Sinatra’s inability to dance. Sinatra later said that in those eight weeks he could have filmed an entire movie.
