Short description
Miser Ebenezer Scrooge is awakened on Christmas Eve by spirits who reveal to him his own miserable existence, what opportunities he wasted in his youth, his current cruelties, and the dire fate that awaits him if he does not change his ways. Scrooge is faced with his own story of growing bitterness and meanness, and must decide what his own future will hold: death or redemption.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Charles Dickens' novella "A Christmas Carol" (1841).
  • The film’s director, Robert Zemeckis, had not worked with “Walt Disney Company” since 1988, when he directed his animated film “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.”
  • This is the third Disney adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novella. In 1983, the animated film “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” was released, featuring almost all of Disney’s classic animation characters. Nine years later, in 1992, “The Muppet Christmas Carol,” also distributed by Disney, was released.
  • This is Jim Carrey’s first project with “Disney” throughout his long acting career.
  • In the Cratchit house, you can notice a portrait of the author of “A Christmas Carol,” Charles Dickens, hanging above the fireplace.
  • When Scrooge falls into his grave, we can see a moment when the camera zooms in on the face of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, and his empty eye sockets flash with blue fire. This is a direct reference to Death from the “Discworld” cycle by popular British author Terry Pratchett: “His eye sockets are empty, but tiny blue lights burn in their depths.”
