What's left behind the scenes

  • The complete version of the film has a runtime of 144 minutes.
  • A budding director from Texas spent a lot of time on set, even though he had no involvement with the film whatsoever. He was simply nearby, shooting his low-budget film (which had a budget of only $5,000). The director's name was Robert Rodriguez, and the film was the thriller 'Musician' (1993), which brought him fame.
  • The film was shot on a ranch specially built for this purpose in the Mexican desert. The cast and crew spent 17 weeks there.
  • When director Alfonso Arau was asked why he chose an Italian actor for the lead role, despite the fact that he didn't even speak Spanish, he replied that he couldn't find a man as handsome as Marco Leonardi anywhere in Mexico.
  • As part of a campaign to promote the theme of exotic dishes serving as aphrodisiacs, 'Miramax' persuaded the owners of 30 Mexican restaurants to include dishes from the film on their menus and offered amateur cooks the opportunity to participate in a competition for the most seductive recipe (the prize was a trip to Mexico).
