What's left behind the scenes
- In his book "How Film Is Made," director Sidney Lumet describes a disagreement between actor River Phoenix and screenwriter Naomi Foner. The film interrupts River Phoenix's character's classic piano solo, while the script stipulated that Danny Pope should be playing a jazz composition at the moment of his arrest to mask his confusion. River was vehemently opposed to this, believing that his character would never experience confusion while playing the piano. Lumet was very impressed by the young actor's persistence and ultimately filmed the scene as Phoenix wanted.
