- The film is based on the eponymous bestseller by renowned American author Carl Hiaasen, first published in 2002. The novella received numerous literary awards, including an honorable mention from the Newbery Medal, considered the main award of the year in children's literature.
- If you look closely at the small print in the newspaper under the photograph of Officer Delinko's car, which has been painted black, you will notice that the director, Will Shriner, is listed as the photographer.
- Famous American singer Jimmy Buffett, known for his original style, became one of the film's producers, played a small role as Mr. Ryan, a marine biology teacher, and wrote and performed five original songs for the soundtrack.
- The main part of the filming took place from July 6 to September 2, 2005, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and on the small island of Gasparilla off the coast of Florida. Several scenes were filmed separately much later in Los Angeles in January 2006.
