Short description
Adèle Hugo, daughter of renowned French writer Victor Hugo, falls in love with British soldier Albert Pinson while living in exile off the coast of England. Though he spurns her affections, she follows him to Nova Scotia and takes on the alias of Adèle Lewly. Albert continues to reject her, but she remains obsessive in her quest to win him over.

- François Truffaut appears in a cameo role as an officer whom the main character mistakes for Albert.
- Initially, François Truffaut (1932-1984) considered filming a spectacular drama with Jeanne Moreau (1928-2017) in the lead role, but then he decided to cast Catherine Deneuve (with whom he was having an affair) as the protagonist. However, work on the film stretched out over 7 years, and in the end he chose actress Isabelle Adjani, whom he had once seen in a production at the Théâtre du Comédie-Française.
