In many European countries, the film was released under the title “Joy Stick Heroes”.
The creators intended for the film to introduce the highly anticipated and subsequently extraordinarily popular video game "Super Mario Bros. 3" to American audiences for the first time. Although "The Wizard" wasn't a major box office hit, its premiere further fueled interest in the video game's soon-to-be-released American version.
The video game tournament host announces that no one has yet played the game chosen for the finals, "Super Mario Bros. 3", even though it had been released and available in Japan a year before the film's release.
American cinemas distributed copies of "Pocket Power," the pocket-sized version of the video game magazine "Nintendo Power," during screenings of the film.
