During the filming of the movie, Sacha Baron Cohen, as Bruno, went hunting with three residents of rural America who had no idea about his character's sexual preferences, nor that they were on a film set. However, upon seeing Cohen naked and dancing around a campfire, they became enraged, grabbed their weapons, and nearly shot the comedian.
A scene dedicated to Michael Jackson, who died on June 25th, was cut from the film just hours before its premiere. The filmmakers decided that after the pop star's death, it would be unethical to leave jokes about him in the film.
The final song of the film was performed by Bruno together with world stars such as Bono, Sting, Slash, Elton John, Snoop Dogg, and Chris Martin. Notably, almost all of them (with the exception of Snoop Dogg) are subjects of the United Kingdom.
According to the filmmakers, the police were called 91 times during filming.
The scene where Bruno walks the runway in a ridiculous outfit was filmed in September 2008 at an Italian fashion show. Sacha Baron Cohen was detained by the police at that time.
Cohen was inspired to create the scene with people-chairs by the famous Milgram psychological experiment. Stanley Milgram, a psychologist at Yale University, attempted to determine how far a person could go in their actions under the influence of authority. Sacha Baron Cohen suggested to singers Paula Abdul and La Toya Jackson to use Mexicans as chairs, claiming that Johnny Depp did the same.
