- Director and lead actor Marlon Brando insisted on actually drinking before filming a certain scene in order to better portray someone who was drunk, but he drank so much that he could neither act in front of the camera nor fulfill directorial duties, so he ordered filming to be postponed until tomorrow. The same thing happened the next day.
- Marlon Brando would sit on the ocean shore for hours waiting for the perfect sound of the surf.
- Filming began on December 2, 1958, and was not completed until the fall of 1960.
- Marlon Brando's lack of directorial experience consistently affected the film's production. He used six times more film than necessary for shooting, was constantly behind schedule, and exceeded the film's budget. Ultimately, the film was taken from him and re-edited by Paramount Pictures.
- Marlon Brando's initial cut of the film ran for 4 hours and 42 minutes. Brando then grew tired of it, and the studio itself trimmed and re-edited the film, reducing its length to 141 minutes, after which they changed the ending, shooting a new one almost a year after principal photography had finished.
