Short description
Haunted by personal demons, Marine Sgt. John Stryker is hated and feared by his men, who see him as a cold-hearted sadist. But when their boots hit the beaches, they begin to understand the reason for Stryker's rigid form of discipline.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film featured three of the soldiers who raised the American national flag on Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945: Rene Gagnon, Ira Hayes, and John Bradley. In addition, officers who fought in the Pacific Ocean participated in the filming: Harold Schrier, David Shaw, and Henry Crowe.
  • The photograph of American soldiers raising the flag over Suribachi became iconic in the United States and was later used to create a monument to the Marine Corps at Arlington National Cemetery.
  • American photographer Joe Rosenthal received the Pulitzer Prize for his famous photograph of the Marines raising the flag on the mountain.
